Strange questions and the answer is ‘probably’. To many it may be no because some people still don’t know much about pressure washers. You see, I moved into my new house 6 months ago and discovered the whole patio and driveway was covered in a moss type substance which I could have spent the next 10 years scraping away only for it to grow back again quickly. So I found out more about pressure washers by asking around. They are great cleaners that use high pressure jets of water to power through dirt and blast away those weeds, moss and other unattractive things that grow in between the stones on your driveway.

Not only that, but these products are pretty cheap and they last many years. Karcher and Nilfisk are the most prominent manufacturers and their products are very reliable. They include many feature such as adding detergent (if you want to use it) and include various nozzles and accessories to clean different types of surfaces. Patio cleaning is a breeze now, as most power washers will include splash back protectors so that you don’t have to worry about cleaning your clothes straight after! There are concentration nozzles too, which help get rid of stubborn areas of grime. Machine strengths are measured in litres per hour i.e. how many litres are pushed through in a given hour. Blocked drains are also a breeze for pressure washers. Our sewer was very problematic as we share the connections with two eateries. Unfortunately they had spent years emptying food down the drains, which clogged everything up. Once the pressure washer was out, there was no stopping us! The drain was clear within minutes (and prior to this, the neighbours had spent various hours with rods trying to clear it).

3D Printing Houses

3D printing is a very interesting form of manufacturing technology in my opinion. This technology allows for the creation of virtually anything. Many printers exist out there, and many materials are offered to choose from. In fact, more than 100 materials are offered for printing. I want to discuss how this technology can change the way we look at efficiency. Before I can do that, let me tell you what 3D printing really is, and how the process works.

3D printing is the layer by layer creation of pretty much whatever you want in one (or more) of a variety of materials. These machines, or printers, will lay down layers of material down, sometimes as thin as 12 microns, sometimes as thick as 12 inches. It all depends on the printer. Some of the machines are the size of a desktop computer, which usually yields small parts like rings, jewelry, or hearing aids. Some 3D printing machines, or printers, are about the size of a refrigerator and they can produce parts which are around 10″ x 10″ x 10″. Some machines are almost the width of your bed, and can produce parts as large as a motorcycle helmet. Some are incredibly large, and can produce houses out of concrete! It all depends on which machine you want, which material you want, the levels of detail, smoothness, etc. There are quite a few factors.

How does the process actually work? Well, initially a design will have to be mocked up on the computer by a designer, engineer, artists, or whatever you’d like to call it. This design can be pretty intricate, as 3D printing doesn’t rely on the same design rules that other forms of manufacturing do. These designs will be made in the form of a 3D model, created out of various software. This model will then be sent to the machine for 3D printing. 3D printing revolves around a CAM system, or a computer aided manufacturing system. This means that the process is almost entirely automated. The computer will “aid” the manufacturing process, and tell the printer itself where to lay down the material. This process is very neat, as it is pretty much entirely automated when it comes down to producing pieces.

One interesting application I want to talk about is the creation of houses. I’m talking about 3D printing houses. There is technology available which allows for the creation of entire houses through printing concrete. The machines are able to create the homes in the course of 24 hours. I’m not entirely sure how electrical outlets, plumbing, and lighting works –but I know that the frame can be manufactured within a day. This is great, as 3D printing is almost entirely automated. This lowers the expenses for employment. The process itself is actually less expensive. It is much greener for the environment. It is much cheaper on material. It is much quicker. This will help promote inexpensive housing in 3rd world countries, or even various expeditions around the world, or even to crazy places like the moon!

3D printing is a very neat form of manufacturing technology in my opinion. It allows for the creation of some seriously intricate pieces that can’t be done through traditional manufacturing, it is very efficient in many situations, and has no ceiling on where it can go. There are some crazy applications such as printing parts to firearms, food, houses, organs, and other entirely custom designs. There is simply no limit as to where this technology could go in my opinion. One factor about this technology that I want to discuss is the efficiency, as well as the “green” capabilities of this technology. 3D Printing is much more friendly for the environment than other forms of manufacturing like mold manufacturing, or traditional (and newer) machining applications. There are simply so many possibilities for this technology, not to mention the great factors for it.

There are so many options when it comes into manufacturing pieces. There are so many materials to choose from, there are well over 100 in fact. There are so many machines to choose from! There are printers which are as small as your desktop printer, but there are printers which are larger than your king sized bed. Some of these printers will be creating small pieces for dental applications, hearing aids, jewelry applications, and small pieces. Some of these printers are prototyping large pieces used in cars, houses, and various large pieces. There are tons of variety in what can be produced.

How does 3D printing actually work? Well, like I said the printer will lay down material one layer at a time. However, these machines run off of a CAM system, or a computer aided manufacturing system. This means that 3D printing is done through an automated process. A designer of some kind will have to create a 3D model from his or her computer, and he or she will have to send the model to the printer. When everything is assembled on the printer, the design will be plugged I, and the operator will pretty much hit “go” and the print will start.

This technology is very significant, as it is very green for the environment. The amount of material used is typically the amount of material used. Due to the layer by layer process, material is added, not removed and wasted. Also, 3D printing helps to reduce outsourced work, as it can simply be plugged into the machine in the US, instead of outsourced to India, China, or Taiwan. The transportation of moving product from a facility in China to the USA is much harsher than the production of a custom part from a local printer.
